Walter Hubert FONTAINE

Né à Saint Helier, Jersey, en
1866, Walter Fontaine était matelot à bord du Hilda lors de la
dernière traversée. Son père, boucher de son état, résidait alors en
cette ville, au 11 New Street avec sa mère Ann Beck. Par la suite, la
famille déménageait à Belvedere, St. Saviour, près de St Helier.
A 36 ans, n'ayant jamais été
marié, Walter prenait femme et épousait le 21 septembre 1902 en l'église
Saint Luke de Jersey, Mary Cowdery, une jeune femme de 28 ans originaire
de l'Ile de Wight. De cette union naissait au foyer du couple, 7 Dyer Rd à Southampton le 29 juillet 1903 un garçon qui fut prénommé
Walter, Francis. Puis, la famille déménageait au 118 Shirley Road et
naissait ensuite, le 15 mars 1905 un deuxième garçon qui fut prénommé
Theodore Frederick.
Après le naufrage, le corps de
Walter ne fut pas rendu par la mer. Son épouse se
trouvait alors à Jersey en compagnie de ses enfants quand au mois de janvier 1906 son bébé alors âgé de 10
mois venait à décéder à son tour à la suite de convulsions. On imagine
aisément le drame que vécut cette femme qui en l'espace de deux mois
perdait son mari et un fils. |

Born at Saint Helier, Jersey,
Walter Fontaine was a seaman on board the Hilda during her fatal
crossing. His father, a butcher was at the time living 11 New Street in
this city with Ann Beck, his mother. Later, the family moved to
Belvedere, St. Saviour, a parish close to Saint Helier.
On Sept. 21st, 1902, still bachelor at 36, Walter
married Mary Cowdery, a spinster girl of 28 coming from Isle of Wight at
St Luke church of St Helier. The couple who was then living 7 Dyer
Rd, Southampton soon welcomed Walter Francis, born on July 29th, 1903
and later moved to 118 Shirley Rd.
Then Theodore Frederick was born on March 15th, 1905.
After the wreck, Walter's
body was never rendered by the sea. His wife was still in Jersey with her children when in January 1906, her baby died from convulsions. One can
imagine the awful sorrow in which was the poor lady who within 2 months had
lost her husband and one son. |

Ce 22 Avril à 13h30, nous prenions place à
bord de Mai Manach la vedette SNSM de Dinard pour un pélerinage sur les
lieux du naufrage. Pour Betty c'était un moment exceptionnel qui lui
permettait de renouer dans le temps avec le souvenir de ce grand-père
disparu dont sa grand-mère lui avait tant parlé. Tandis qu'elle jetait à
la mer fleur après fleur, la vedette pavillons en berne faisait retentir
par trois fois sa sirène en mémoire des victimes qui avaient perdu la
vie en ces lieux. En vérité, un moment de grande émotion.
At 1.30 pm
on that 22nd of April, we boarded Mai Manach, the rescue boat of
SNSM in Dinard for a pilgrimage on the spot where occured the wreck. For
Betty it was an exceptionnal moment which allowed her to gather her
thoughts over the watery grave of her grandfather. While she was
throwing overboard flower after flower, our boat with flags hoisted down
blew her horn three times in memory of all the souls who had lost their
lives in that place. A moving instant indeed. |
