   James, fils de William et Elizabeth Grinter, née Eveleigh, a vu le jour le 28 Aout 1856 dans le village de Ryall, paroisse de Whtichurch Canonicorum dans le Dorset. Lors du recensement de 1871, il apparait comme résident à St Pierre Port de Guernesey. C'est là qu'il prend pour épouse Amandine Coutu en 1878. Le couple aura 13 enfants dont plusieurs décèderont jeunes.

Lors du recensement de 1905, il résidait au 10 Frederick Street, Newtown, Southampton. Il décèdera dans sa 89e année en Mai 1945.

  

   James was born in the village of Ryall, in the parish of Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset, on the 28th of August 1856. He was the son of William Gillingham and Elizabeth Grinter. The 1871 census has his address as St Peter Port, Guernsey.

He married Amandine Coutu of St Peters Port, in 1878. They raised 13 children, though a number of these died young.

In 1891 his address is given as 26, Liverpool Street, Southampton. In 1901, he was living at 32, Liverpool Street, and in 1905 at 10, Frederick Street, Newtown, Southampton. He died in May 1945.

HILDA SURVIVOR'S STORY. Vessel Was Going Dead Slow-Boilers Did Not Burst


 ST. MALO, Nov. 21---James Grinter, the only survivor of the crew of the British Channel steamer Hilda, wrecked off this port on Saturday night, with the loss of 123 lives, was interviewed to-day and settled disputed points in connection with the disaster. Grinter said:

"There is no truth in the report that the Hilda's boilers burst. There was a terrific shock as the steamer struck the rocks, and this made a noise resembling an explosion. But I am an engine room mechanic, and as such I am positive that the boilers are intact.

"The Hilda was pinned on a huge rock, and the waves, sweeping fiercely over her, carried away the women and children.

 

"With thirty other persons, by actual count, I climbed up into the rigging, and I managed to hold on until rescued. But the others gradually fell off before the fearful storm of hail and sleet, until only six of us remained, when we were sighted by the steamer Ada, which rescued us when we were nearly dead as the result of cold and exposure.

 

"The report that the Hilda struck on Sunday morning is also wrong. She went on the rocks at 10 o'clock on Saturday night, while going dead slow and trying to make the entrance of St. Malo harbor."

L’HISTOIRE DU RESCAPE DU HILDA. Le navire avançait lentement – Les chaudières n’ont pas explosé.

ST. MALO, 21 Nov. – James Grinter, seul rescapé de l’équipage du vapeur trans-manche anglais Hilda, naufragé au large de ce port samedi soir a été entendu ce jour et a précisé certains points en rapport avec le désastre. Grinter a dit :

« Il est inexact de dire que les chaudières du Hilda ont explosé. Il y eut un choc terrible quand le vapeur a heurté les récifs et cela a fait un bruit comparable à une explosion. Mais je suis moi-même un mécanicien et sur ce point, je suis affirmatif, les chaudières sont intactes.

Le Hilda était empalé sur un énorme récif et les vagues qui le battaient furieusement emportèrent femmes et enfants.

Avec une trentaine d’autres personnes selon mon compte, j’ai grimpé dans la mâture où j’ai réussi à me maintenir jusqu’au sauvetage. Mais les autres sont tombés l’un après l’autre dans cette tempête de grèle et de neige fondante jusqu’à ce qu’il ne reste plus que six d’entre nous. C’est à ce moment là que nous avons été aperçus par le vapeur Ada qui nous a sauvés alors que nous étions déjà presque morts de froid.

L’information selon laquelle le Hilda aurait fait naufrage Dimanche matin est aussi inexacte. Il s’est jeté sur les rochers vers 10 heures du soir Samedi alors qu’il avançait très lentement, essayant de reconnaître l’entrée de la passe du port de St. Malo. »
